Boxers - Historical Notes
Boxers enjoy close ties with Tibetan Dogs, massive dogs with a dense coat that was black and tan in color. As the ancestors of modern Boxers moved to warmer climates, they lost their long coat. Archeological diggings in Persia revealed the drawings of huge short-coated dogs. It is evident that the dogs were used in hunting lions, boars, and other large animals. They also were good guard and fighting dogs. It goes without saying that the dogs were rather expensive and only the rich could afford having them.
As time went by, demand for hunting dogs decreased. Preference was given to fighting dogs with a great extent of agility and endurance. The Bullenbeisser could meet all these needs. One of the most prominent traits of the dog was a short muzzle with an uplifted nose that provided for a strong grip and did not let the victim go. They became popular in Great Britain and across Europe. However, pit-fighting prohibition led to a decreased demand in these dogs. Yet, many people still made good use of their working qualities. Bullenbeissers served as guard dogs.
At the end of the 19th century, German breeders united their efforts to produce a new breed of dog. They used the blood of the Bullenbeisser and the English Bulldog in their breeding. Inbreeding was one of the basic techniques used. A well-balanced, courageous dog with a strong grip and a specific head built was the end result of their work.
In 1896, the first breed club appeared, as well as the description of the main characteristics of the breed. The Boxer acquired the official status of the working dog in 1925. The breed was acknowledged as a good guard and police dog. Since that time Boxers enjoyed attention of many people all over the world.
